The highways division are seeking views on how vehicle duty should be charged for normal road vehicles & aslo for veteran (historic, rally etc) vehicles...

Im certainly going to complete the questionaire- I think tax should be added to fuel cost but as per the letter they are NOT goign to consider this (aparently is would add 24p per litre). There really are not many options on the form- milleage sounds great but do we really want annual testing?

Personally Im going to select the tax based on milleage option- but put in the notes why its not possible to have a quick visit to the test center so they can verify the reading- I dont think a full test is needed just to verify millege...

Links here on the right of the page.... http://www.gov.im/transport/highways/ only 5 weeks left!

Ive a feeling either way we are going to be charged more tax & that is pretty much goodbye to owning an afordable performance car..
I reject your reality & substitute my own..

Adding the price onto the fuel would be best, but as it is not an option I think that mileage based is best. I am all for annual testing, as I;m sure there are many vehicles on the roads that could be potentially dangerous.

24p/litre? Where'd they come up with that figure?? That would mean I'd be paying £500 a year going on 40 litres/week usage......

But I'd be paying £144 a year based on 50l a month. Because I use the road less. That's what makes it fairer.

Id pay around £20/year for my rally car tax :-) (it costs £160 now) ... Our other vehicles would be +/- £30/year each ...

Id be interested to see how much they would charge per mile if they went that route....

I'm glad this is being done. The flat rate per vehicle would benefit us as a household. Obviously the M3 and the RS are ridiculously high to tax due to Co2 and engine capacity, but we do very few miles a year!

The fuel duty would favour us too.......and I would have no problem in having mileage verified every year (although some would abuse this!). I wouldn't be too keen on a Manx MOT though!!!!
I'm aiming to be a legend, and I will be!

Tax on the petrol is possibly the fairest plus it would mean that there was no way that someone could not pay their road tax either. No more queues at the post office at the end of the month ;) I would possibly pay more on the audi that way but a lot less on the golf so it evens out i guess

is there an option that says ill pay the tax when they fix the bloody roads?

Two buckled wheels they wouldnt pay for, knackered suspension that had to be replaced @ 1500 notes and now they want to increase the road tax.

    KISS MY ARSE.

Shame there is no option for this....

The roads have always been sh*t here, its big alloys and rubberband tyres on modern cars that now show this up!
