Well as a few of you already know I bought myself an s13 a few weeks ago.

Unfortunately the big ends decided to start knocking last week so this weekend the engine came out so I can fix it.
Getting the engine ready to come out.

    About to be lifted out

With the engine out I could get the sump off and get to the bottom end. Here is the worn shells that where removed.

Crank is fine and only has a few 10ths of a millimeter difference in wear between them so no need for a regrind! New shells should arrive on Wednesday. Just need to give it a good clean in there in the meantime.

While the car is off the road its a good time to get the silly open diff welded. Luckily I had a diff removal tool!

    Diff out

    Nice welded diff! :D

Diff is now back on the car. Now got to wait for the new shells to arrive and a few other bits and bobs. If all goes well I will be back on the road late Wednesday night!

Big thanks to the people that have helped me get this sorted, Loz, John, Ross and Tree!

Few tenths of a thou' fella 0.0001" :)

I checked the specs today and your crank falls right in the middle of the tolerance

    Nice one - cool cars!

Whats the end float like in the crank? Mine was horrific when I stripped it down and I ended up sacking the car off due to lack of time & money. The legacy takes up enough of both!

Not taken the crank out to check and the gearbox is still attached. Im sure it will be fine as the the big ends are prone to going on these and are normally fine after just changing the shells.

    I hope...

My S13 had shagged big ends too but as well as that the end float was something nuts like 1-2mm! You could grab the flywheel & pull it in & out.

if the crank has knocked, they have to be measured, also were the conrod housings still round?

I didn't measure anything, everything looked fine which is why i only did the shells, i wasn't going to spend a lot of time and money on it as it would of cost £200 to get the crank reground and on a £50 car its just not worth it so i paid £80 for the shells put it all back together and thought it was fine until i revved it past 4k and found out it still knocked so it got sold for spares.
