    in a MK1 escort?
not easy, and really not worth it,
    do you really mean MK1?

    Like 60's/70's escort?

they have longitudinal engines, best bet is a Pinto

pinto is good, its cheap and you can push 200bhp from it, but there old and really heavy.

you could use a 1600 crossflow, lotus twin cam head, steel bottom end, twin 40's.

    now your talking!

no it wont fit, not without lotsawork, you could make it fit by using a sierra 1.6 cvh block but an building it into that but then it would stilll be wankybollocks piece of sh*t xr2i engine, the best thing to do is buy a rotten 2.0 sohc pinto engined sierra n use the engine/box outta that cos its the same as the mk1/2 rs 2000 motor, dont use a transit/p100 engine tho cos theyre lower compression
If you think my attitude stinks, you should smell my fingers!! :-)
