Well, I've decided to try and make my own cider but it seems to makes 25 litres of cider (the fermentation buckets are sold in 5 gallon/25 litre sizes) you'd need about 180 apples! That's making the cider yourself then fermenting that to make hard cider.

So, does anyone know if there's an apple orchard on the Island? I'd prefer to buy from an orchard because the shop sold apples will be covered in pesticides and preservatives and other chemicals!

This is quite a good site by the way: http://www.balliihoo.co.uk/index.php

They seem a bit expensive but they sell all the equipment that's needed.

    Cheers,
    Jay

My uncle has done his own ginger beer and bitter I think. Seriously, his ginger beer was the nicest thing ever, one bottle and you are away with it!!!

A guy I know has just started brewing his own cider, tried the first batch, not bad but fairly weak. He then built a still and his latest concoction was made from rhubarb!!! Instant heart burn and not very nice, but he recons about 80% proof!!!

That's very kind of you Marshall! Obviously any cider we make you'd be welcome to share (provided we're still alive after the first tasting)

Well the bits I was checking out:

    Ah kid:
    For fermentation:
    http://www.balliihoo.co.uk/balliihoo-5- ... r-p-7.html

Then you syphon it into this bucket (mostly to clear the liquid up from any yeast still suspended):
    http://www.balliihoo.co.uk/balliihoo-5- ... -p-33.html

Obivously need a spoon and a syphon:
    http://www.balliihoo.co.uk/home-brew-18 ... -p-13.html
    http://www.balliihoo.co.uk/balliihoo-st ... n-p-3.html

And a hydrometer (not quite sure how to use it yet!) :
    http://www.balliihoo.co.uk/stevenson-re ... -p-83.html

And then you either bottle it or put it in a barrel:
    http://www.balliihoo.co.uk/5-gallon-bal ... p-209.html

So about ÂŁ60 thereabouts for all the bits to make it. Then you need the ingredients.
