imports straight out of japan are restricted to 112mph but this is easily sorted with a de-restrictor that dependant on the model year of the car will be fitted to the clocks or the gearbox speed sensor

if you look for insurance through mainstream insurers then yes insurance can be dear for both uk cars and imports. i insure my jdm impreza through a specialist import/modified car insurer and I pay less than £500 per year with all mods declared

neither of these things are difficult to sort out or expensive in my opinion, what can be expensive however are the maintainence and running costs

remember they are performance cars and cost as such

there are loads out there that have been bought by people thinking they could get a cheap fast car then driven it hard and not maintained it properly because they could not afford it, these are obviously the ones to stear clear of but there are plenty of well cared for and sweet imprezas out there you just need to look for them and not buy the first one you see

    This may be worth investigating:

If you can, get a Type RA or Type R, they are lighter, more powerful and most have the adjustable diff. The earlier cars had closed deck blocks and under piston oil squirters.

    You won't be disappointed.

You should be able to get one on the IOM for that price.

Remember the classic UK impreza's are not the same as imports- they have less power (212 as opposed to 240,260 or 280 dependant on the year).

IMO the best would be a 1998 WRX, but the earlier ones will be cheaper to insure... Just dont forget the hidden costs (service & tyres etc!)
I reject your reality & substitute my own..

possibly worth considering if your more after the style and handling rather than outright performance have you considered a 2.0 awd n/a sport? cheaper to buy, and insure, more economical and (il probably get lynched for this) a lot less likely to go BANG with no warning, also snapping the cambelt wont F**K the engine on these 2 cam engines, not as fast as a turbo obviously but if your mainly after the looks and money is an issue, poss worth considering.
