I don't doubt that Mazda will build a beautiful car with a nice interior that will handle superbly.

The issues still lie with the Wankel/rotary engine........high fuel consumption that is not comparable to the performance on offer, high oil usage, low torque, poor modification potential and the reconditioning work that they seem to need every 70,000 miles.

The lack of turbocharging might mean that the power delivery is a little 'thin' as with the RX8.

I'd rather Mazda build an RX7 'like' coupe with a tuned version of the turbocharged 2.3 litre engine that powers the Mazda 3 MPS.

Oil usage is not as high as people think, they use about a litre a month and is a necessity, though most people that tune the older rotaries run them premix with a 2 stroke oil.
Most failures are down to owner ignorance as it is an unconventional design.

An RX without a rotary is just an mx5, it would lack the high revving character of a rotary powered model. Its what mazda do and they can do it well, the old n/a FC would do 120k + before needing work. For me the wankel would make it, much in the same way as the boxer engine ruins the gt86 for me. A high revving motor with a beautiful exhaust note coupled with the good chassis mazda are capable of producing would make up for the ''lack'' of power / torque ( even though torque is a grey area, its like comparing 2 & 4 stroke motorbikes )

More to the point it would likely spur Nissan to build the s16 and that'd be the one to watch out for as it would likely be turbo'd out of the box. :D

In my dozy state this morning I neglected to notice that the expected year is 2017. Grief, bit of a way off then!! I'm sure it'll still be ridiculously thirsty for a 300BHP car......

As for high reving motors, I am a fan too. I've owned several cars that rev'd to 8,000 and beyond (CRX Vtec, Integra Type R, M3).

Yeah its a way away which should give them time to produce some fancy titanium (or unobtanium) apex seals for a bit of longevity but it will still like a drink but meh, i'd have one over a boring 86 with the horrible subaru engine :)

Having just bought a spider after considering an MX5, I'd be more interested in this:

Personally the front end is shocking, the rest looks nicer than the mx5, but....

Could this be the worlds first 'reliable' Alfa? :O granted it may lack the "character" of a "proper" Alfa but this one wont get in a strop every time you look at it. :)
