If it's just ice and nothing else then like I say nothing short of chains or studs will get any traction on a hill, but if there's the odd little bit of something else here & there then yeah I suppose a skilled driver might get away with it.
On a flat surface even sheet ice can be driven on. Just slowly!

no no,
a steep hard field with short grass after a bit of rain and it is like driving on ice,no grip because the ground is that hard the grass makes it slide, and a lot steeper than any roads in the island. strap 12ton behind you. your sat on 7 ton so your talking 19ton all up and it makes for an intresting day, but it can be done.
Not that its nice mind you.
You can get away without traction as long as you keep the speed the right. i seen me slide well over 400meters without a chance of hells way of stopping and you just got to be brave and go faster
just anuf to stop the wheels spinning but to stay in control. but there is a vary fine line of being in control and being out of it. 1/2 mph can mean the diffrence of getting to the bottem or ending on your roof.
Or worst case running out of gears, because once them wheels start going backwards the only thing you can do is go faster and get the wheels spinning the right way, but once you have done that you have to try and go back down the gears again or let of the peddle and hope for the best.
Like i said injerbreck sheet ice all the way down and we got to the bottem, not that we chanced it again
It can be done it has been done, but christ it puts hair on your chest and sh*t in your pants.
i take you out next time and show you if you like
But i do know what your saying because even i can have miss haps i have done in the past and will do again no dowt then again it prob dont help where i go

, lucky its only ever been bent bumpers and such, hedges are quite soft when they have snow on it.
But if you dont know the ice is there or hit ice then to be honest chances are you have got no hope at all, best advice i can allways give for that head for a hedge as soon as, while its going to damage your car 10mph into a hedge is better than 30mph. because once you lose grip its amazing how fast you gain speed.
If you lose traction going down hill in ice or up it, steer towards the hedge and try and kiss the hedge on the way dow, should take some speed of with out causeing hugh amounts of damage, depending on what the hedges are like,
nearly came a cropper on the brandywell road, had to turn back round because of the drifts, but had to go like a tit to get over the drifts on the way back down,
we got to 30mph till i decided that i may be in trouble and with the tight right hander fast approching i took the only choice i could.
find the biggest drift and slam in to it, took 3 of the buggers to get me down to a safe speed, road was like a sheet of ice!!!!!
(PS i had Good reason to be up there so dont worry Mr plod and that part of the road was not shut)
